Tens of thousands of people are expected to flock to the Art Gallery of Ballarat for the next two months as part of the Archibald Prize.
Held in Ballarat for the second year running, the Art Gallery is the exclusive Victorian host of the 2016 Art Gallery of New South Wales travelling exhibition.
The 2016 exhibition will feature 50 finalist works, including Louise Hearman’s winning portrait of Barry Humphries as well as Betina Fauvel-Ogden’s much-loved portrait of George Calombaris.

Visit Ballarat chief executive officer Noel Dempsey said it was a massive coup to have the Archies return to the city.
“Not only does it put us on the map as an artistic centre, but it attracts thousands of people – young and old – to admire the work on show and the wonders of our own city,” Mr Dempsey said.
Australia’s most prestigious portraiture prize, the Archies are known for their showcase of notable and often controversial Australian figures.
Art Gallery of Ballarat director Gordon Morrison said the exhibition provided the perfect opportunity to promote the city.
“We had train-loads of people coming into Ballarat for the Archibald last year to experience Australia’s most popular arts event at the country’s premier regional gallery,” he said.
“This second time around will really reinforce how easy it is to get to Ballarat and what a great place it is for a short, or longer, visit.”
